Chapter 19

Good Intentions

“The Great Game Rule #19: Every new deck shall contain a persistent mantle card.”

Wolfe drove his car away from the airport, making sure to stick to the speed limit. His eyelids were heavy, and his thoughts drifted to his bed more than once.

Wolfe’s phone buzzed in his pocket, and he almost threw the thing out the window. It was nearly nine p.m. on a day when he had gotten maybe six hours of sleep interrupted in the middle, and he was pretty sure between people and their cards he had killed close to fifty things and been killed in turn nearly twice, but for Shel’s healing.

But he put aside his annoyance and glanced at the phone.

“Who is it?” Shel asked.

“Damian,” Wolfe said. “No idea why the hobbit is calling me when I didn’t even promise to take care of his shit until tomorrow.”

“Are you going to answer?” Shel asked, her green eyes slightly wide.

“Ugh,” Wolfe sighed. “Might as well. He’ll just pout if I don’t.”

Shel laughed.

Wolfe slid the answer button and put the phone to his ear. “New phone, who dis?”

“What?” came Damian’s confused voice from the other end.

Shel raised one eyebrow at Wolfe, her own green eyes quizzical.

Wolfe laughed. “Never mind, wrong generation. What can I do for you, Damian?”

“Ha ha,” Damian said. “Right, well, I was originally calling for something else. But first off: I just heard that you were in a shootout with Marko and Ramius at the Noimoire pound. Why are you risking yourself on dumb stuff? I thought you were going to take care of the problem with the product and kill Javier Garcia. You shouldn’t risk killing yourself over small stuff. It’s imperative that we get the goods, and that Javier become one of his own dead. You’re our only talented enforcer left.”

Wolfe did his best to keep the nuclear sarcasm from his voice. “Well, your concern for my health is appreciated, but I was on my own time. I didn’t expect Marko and his dead brother to be there, alright? Besides, why are you upset? I killed another Cobra lieutenant. Fuck, we’ve been dealing with these guys for nearly ten years, and I’ve taken out a third of their lieutenants in less than forty-eight hours. Doesn’t that deserve an attaboy or something? Throw me a bone here.”

Shel snickered at Wolfe’s outburst.

Lights flashed over the car as Wolfe drove down a long road with dozens of street lamps. They were in darkness, then a flash of light. Darkness. Light. Over and over.

Damian gave a long sigh. “Alright, sorry, sorry. I’m just really excited for some stuff, but I need you for it to all work.”

A sudden thought made Wolfe’s blood go cold. “Wait, how do you know about my dust-up with the Cobras? That was barely three hours ago.”

Damian chuckled. “Well, that brings me to the second thing—the real reason I called. While you were out playing shoot-im cowboy with Marko and poor Ramius, I was doing the work that’ll put our family back on top for generations.
